Goose found shot with crossbow bolt at water park

A goose is recovering at a wildlife hospital after being found with a crossbow bolt through its neck in what rescuers believe was "deliberate animal cruelty".

The injured bird, a juvenile greylag goose, was found on Thursday with serious injuries at North Yorkshire Water Park near Wykeham by a member of staff.

Charity Yorkshire Swan and Wildlife Rescue, which is now caring for the goose, said it was "deeply disturbing and difficult to comprehend" anyone inflicting the injury.

North Yorkshire Police has been informed of the incident, and the rescue is urging anyone with information to come forward.

The bolt passed through the lower part of the bird's neck, according to the rescue.

Dan Sidley, the charity's founder, said he was "shocked to discover the extent of this bird's injuries".

"Deliberately inflicting suffering on a defenceless young wild animal is deeply disturbing, and something we find difficult to comprehend," he said.

James Whitehead, operations manager at North Yorkshire Water Park, said it "prides itself on supporting wildlife at the park".

"We proactively maintain the habitat for all wildlife," he said.

"Our thousands of visitors enjoy our attractions and respect the wildlife, so we are saddened by this incident.

"We are working fully with the authorities to investigate what happened. It goes without saying we will not tolerate any abuse of wildlife at the park."

The goose remains in the care of the charity's base at Barlow near Selby, where the animal is receiving treatment while it makes a recovery.

North Yorkshire Police was contacted by the BBC for comment.
