More than 1,000 homes are without power in Bedworth after a fault with underground cables.

National Grid Power Distribution said it was first alerted to the power cut at 02:42 BST on Wednesday. It said engineers were on the scene and were working to restore power but that they weren't expecting everyone to be reconnected until 12:00.

Power had gone off at about 02.30 one woman said and added having no fan during a heat wave had meant having a very unhappy one-year-old child.

A red warning for extreme heat has come into force in parts of England and Wales, lasting until 21:00 on Thursday.

The power cuts affect CV12 9 postcodes, which includes areas around Marston Lane, Furnace Road and Regent Street.

National Grid paid to have an ice cream van in the area earlier in the day, giving out free ice creams to those affected.

Naomi Bedding who lives on Marston Lane said the power outage had "massively impacted" her.

"Our electric went around 2.30am," she said.

"I am a priority because of my daughter. I called national grid at 5am and they said it's a cable underground and I should ask for help off family or friends as it could be 6pm before it's back on for us.

"We are in a heatwave so no fan meant a very unhappy one-year-old."

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said repairs were ongoing and they hoped to have power back by "early afternoon".

"We appreciate being without electricity is extremely frustrating and thank people for their patience while we work as quickly as we can to make repairs," they added.

"We are providing free welfare support for customers affected by the power cut. A van offering food will be on the junction of Furnace Road/Hazel Grove in Bedworth from 12:30."

The company also urged people affected to use "cool spaces", with the following community spaces open to anyone who needed them:

  • Bedworth Library - open until 17:00
  • Nuneaton Library - open until 15:30
  • Stockingford Library Warwickshire - open until 17:00
  • 115 Holbrook Lane Coventry - open until 19:00
