Landfill site fire brought under control

A large fire that erupted at a landfill site has been brought under control.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident at 17:43 BST on Sunday at Greenways Landfill site, Appleford Sidings in Sutton Courtenay, near Didcot, where a "large volume of non-hazardous processed landfill, and waste material" were burning.

The rescue said eight crews, one high volume pump, 4x4 vehicles, a water carrier and a multi-terrain water carrier from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue had been used to tackled the blaze.

It said the cause was not believed to be suspicious and further investigations would follow in the coming days.

The landfill site is near Didcot Power Station, which is owned and operated by the German energy firm RWE.

Fire crews remained on scene overnight and into Monday to continue working with the site operatives and managers to resolve the incident.

The rescue previously advised nearby residents to go indoors and close any windows and doors, as well as to consider turning off any air-conditioning units, due to smoke from the blaze.

Site operator FCC Environment said the cause was currently unknown.

"The fire was largely extinguished by midnight, and we would like to thank the Fire Service and our site teams for their swift response in bringing the incident under control," a spokesperson for the company said.

RWE, Oxfordshire County Council and Vale of White Horse District Council have also been contacted for a comment.
