An 81-year-old walker was rescued by a mountain rescue team after his torch failed.

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team said it was called in the early hours of Wednesday to assist in finding a walker who had set off from near the Snake Inn, in the Hope Valley.

It said concern was raised when the walker - who the team said had taken "excellent precautions" - had not returned home, and the team was alerted by police at 02:00 BST following a call from his wife.

The mountain rescue team said he was found "safe and well" after he could not safely continue returning to his vehicle due to his torch failing.

In a post on social media, the team said the walker was "well equipped" for the conditions, and had left a detailed route plan with his wife.

A spokesperson for the team said: "This high level of preparation - along with the detailed information passed to us - greatly assisted the team in quickly identifying priority search areas."
