Flats approved at fashion brand's first building
LDRSPlans for flats on the upper floors of a building where a global fashion brand was born have been approved.
The proposal for 10 flats above LD Mountain Centre outdoors shop in Dean Street, Newcastle, was approved at a city council planning committee.
The store, which marks its 60th anniversary this year, is where Berghaus was founded in the 1960s.
Planning permission was unanimously granted and Labour councillor Stephen Lambert said it was a "really positive development" to get more people living in the city centre.
He said more space in shop buildings is being turned over to accommodation, adding: "I really like this idea of gearing towards urban professionals living and working in the city."
The first, second and third floors of the 18th century building will be split into 10 flats, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The first floor is currently part of the shop, with the levels above used as storage, packing areas for online sales and office space.
The outdoors shop will remain the ground floor and basement of the grade II listed building, which dates back to the late 1700s and is part of Newcastle's central conservation area.
Storage and office space will be moved offsite.
