Gatwick Airport hit by running water outage

Gatwick Airport has been left without running water after the local area was hit with a supply outage.

Passengers have reported confusion at the UK's second largest airport with some restaurants and bars reportedly shut and issues with toilets and hand-washing facilities.

SES Water, which supplies parts of Surrey, Kent and South London, confirmed it had experienced a power outage at a water treatment works and was working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Gatwick Airport said bottled water was being made available to passengers and staff across the airport along with other contingency measures "to ensure the welfare of our passengers".

The outage comes at the height of the summer season for the airport, which predominantly handles leisure travellers heading on their holidays. No flights have been affected.

SES Water said in a statement to the BBC: "Due to a number of complications caused by power outage at our Bough Beech Water Treatment Works, some customers are experiencing low water pressure or a temporary loss of supply.

"We are working to overcome those complications and return the treatment works to supply as quickly as we can.

"Gatwick Airport is being affected but we are working with them while our teams work to restore normal service as quickly as possible.

"We thank customers and our partners at Gatwick Airport for their patience."
