Tributes have been paid to a grandad with a "heart of gold" who died in a crash last month.

David Reed, 51, was cycling on Nissan Way in Washington on 11 September when he was in a crash with a black Mercedes AMG car on 11 September. He died at the scene.

His family described him as "one of the kindest, gentlest men you could ever meet, with a heart of gold and an infectious laugh" who also was "Sunderland through and through" with a great love for his home town football club.

A 30-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on bail pending further investigations.

Reed, from the South Hylton area of Sunderland, was described as a "devoted husband, much-loved dad and grandad, cherished son, brother and uncle, and a true friend to so many".

His family said they were left "completely heartbroken" at the loss of a man who "adored his grandchildren and would do absolutely anything for the people he loved".

"We still cannot comprehend that he is gone.

"He was loved beyond words and will be missed every single day."
