Driver who rammed car and pub outbuilding jailed

A driver who deliberately reversed at speed into a car and an outbuilding in a pub car park has been jailed.

Gavin Thorpe, 42, smashed into the vehicle and building outside The Park pub in the Wibsey area of Bradford in June.

CCTV footage of the dangerous driving was widely shared on social media following the incident, which Bradford Crown Court heard had been committed out of "rage and anger".

Personal trainer Thorpe, of no fixed abode, was jailed on Monday for 23 months and banned from driving for three years.

Recorder Patrick Palmer was told that an incident in the pub on 15 June had led to a woman asking for a lift from two other men rather than going with Thorpe.

The footage showed Thorpe getting into his black Range Rover and driving towards the only exit from the pub car park.

The CCTV captured the defendant reversing into the front of the car, which contained the two men and the woman, before it was shunted backwards.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Noble said the two men got out of the car, but had to move out of the way as Thorpe reversed at speed again.

He narrowly missed the car, but hit another parked vehicle before smashing into the stone outbuilding.

Thorpe shouted abuse and threw a brick towards the two men as he fled the scene.

The defendant admitted charges of dangerous driving, criminal damage and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

The judge told Thorpe it was "perhaps nothing more than good luck" that no-one had been left seriously injured.
