Man arrested after bow and arrow fired in street

A man has been arrested after a bow and arrow was fired in the street in a West Yorkshire village.

Police were called to reports of a man throwing rubbish and household items out of a car he was driving on Huddersfield Road in Skelmanthorpe, at about 17:30 BST on Tuesday.

It was then reported the man had got out of the car and was firing a bow and arrow at passing vehicles. No one was hurt but a number of vehicles were damaged, West Yorkshire Police said.

A 68-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and remains in custody.

Police said a number of scenes were in place around Huddersfield Road while officers carried out further inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Oliver Coates said: "We recognise that this incident will have caused understandable concern in the community due to the serious nature of it and the fact it occurred in a busy area and was witnessed by many people.

"An increased police presence will remain in the area this evening while the scenes are examined."
