A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in her 70s.

Hertfordshire Police were called to a concern for welfare at Armour Rise in Hitchin at 15:15 BST on Tuesday and found the woman had suffered serious injuries.

She was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.

Douglas Hardy, 59, who lives in the street, has been charged with murder and is scheduled to appear at Hatfield Remand Court later.

Police previously said the pair were known to each other.

Det Insp Adam Bridges said: "Our thoughts are with the woman's family and loved ones at this difficult time."

The force said nobody else was being sought in connection with the death.
