Runner dies after taking part in Cardiff Half Marathon

A runner has died after taking part in Cardiff Half Marathon.

Event organisers Run4Wales said on Monday that the participant had died, adding: "We'd like to acknowledge the event and hospital medical teams who reacted with great speed and professionalism.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the runner's family and friends."

It said no further details would be released "in respect of the family's wishes".

Sunday's race was the 23rd edition of the the 13.1 mile (21km) route, which saw about 30,000 people take to the streets.

In 2024, 37-year-old Stephen Jenkins died in hospital after collapsing at the finish line.

In 2019, Ben McDonald, 25, and Dean Fletcher, 32, crossed the finish line within minutes of each other, and both died after going into cardiac arrest.

Cardiff Half Marathon is Wales' largest mass participant and multi-fundraising event, with more than £4m raised each year for charity.

It's the UK's second largest half marathon and a member of the SuperHalfs, a global series of the world's most prestigious half marathons including races in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen and Valencia. It has also been awarded a Elite Race Label by World Athletics.
