Tonnes of litter picked up by A12 roadside

Almost two and a half tonnes of rubbish was collected during a 12km-long (7.5-mile) roadside clean-up.

Workers from Colchester City Council removed the litter from a stretch of the A12 in Essex over three nights from 6 July.

The street care and safety team collected 2,470kg of material, including litter, fly-tipped waste, tyres, abandoned roadworks signage and debris from vehicles.

Liberal Democrat councillor Martin Goss, portfolio holder for waste, neighbourhoods and leisure, said it showed "the scale of the challenge".

The litter clearance works took place on both the northbound and southbound carriageways between junctions 25 and 26, and on the northbound side between junctions 28 and 29.

The team also cleared six slip roads and six lay-bys as part of the operation.
