City council launches its Christmas Toy Drive
Southend-on-Sea City CouncilA council has launched an appeal for toys to give to vulnerable children for Christmas.
Southend-on-Sea City Council's annual Toy Drive, which runs until Tuesday 15 December, is now in its 13th year.
The council says over the years it has distributed nearly 45,000 donated toys - sorted and wrapped by volunteers - to more than 21,000 children and young people.
Mandy O'Connor, a councillor with a responsibility for children and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), said she was "inspired" every year "by the incredible generosity of our community and the kindness shown to those who need it most".
"Supporting local toy shops while helping to make Christmas magical for others is a wonderful way to give back."
She added that gifts for older children and teenagers were "especially welcome".
They received the fewest donations, but could "benefit just as much from a thoughtful gift at Christmas".
Those wanting to donate can give new, unwrapped toys suitable for babies, children and young people up to the age of 18, including vouchers for toys or days out, selection packs, pens, pencils, colouring books, and toiletry sets.
More details can be found on the council's website.
