Air-conditioned trains are due to be introduced on Northern routes across Manchester and the wider North West from early 2028.

The operator said 37 refurbished trains would replace its ageing Class 323 fleet, which is nearing the end of its working life.

Northern said the trains would provide more capacity and extra space for passengers, as well as luggage racks and power sockets on many routes.

Managing director Tricia Williams said the trains would offer 'air conditioning, more carriages, more space and a more pleasant environment throughout'.

The trains are due to enter service from early 2028, ahead of Northern's planned introduction of up to 450 new trains from 2030.

Rail minister Lord Peter Hendy said passengers across Manchester and the North West deserved a railway that was 'reliable, comfortable and fit for the future'.

Northern operates about 2,650 services a day, serving more than 500 stations across the North of England.
