A man who died after being stabbed in a busy street has been named by police.

Abdillahi Farid Ali, 43, sustained knife wounds during an incident in Small Heath, Birmingham, on Wednesday afternoon and was declared dead at the scene.

A 46-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder. Police said he remained in custody for questioning and they were not currently looking for anyone else.

"This was an extremely traumatising incident to witness, and we want to ensure that people are aware of the support available to them," said Det Insp Nick Barnes.

"Our thoughts remain with Mr Ali's family at this awful time. We are keeping them updated on any developments from the investigation," he added.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said the fatal stabbing had caused "worry in the community" with "a lot of people" in the area around the junction of Whitmore Road and Coventry Road who saw what happened.

"We would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch," they added.
