Some fishermen have not seen a dentist for 20 years, according to health officials

Fishing crews and their families are to be offered free dental check-ups in a mobile studio in Bridlington.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust said some fishermen had not seen a dentist for the past 20 years.

The SeaFit event will take place in Bridlington Harbour on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 May between 10:00 and 16:00 BST.

The sessions will be offered by the charity Dentaid, which provides dental care and oral health advice for people experiencing homelessness, harm, poverty and abuse.

The SeaFit initiative is organised by The Fishermen's Mission and the Seafarers Hospital Society to improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of fishermen throughout the UK.

The event is open to both active and retired fishermen as well as their immediate families.

Attendees will also be able to access support and advice from a range of health and wellbeing providers including the Smoking Cessation Service, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Physio Network, Seafarers Advice and Information Line, Primary Care Network social prescribers and local drug and alcohol services.

Two dentists closed permanently in Bridlington at the end of 2022, leaving patients wanting an NHS dentist on a nine-year waiting list.

In February, East Riding of Yorkshire Council submitted an application to transform Crown Community Centre offices, in Quay Road, into a surgery providing up to 1,700 appointments a week, including about 840 for NHS patients.

Last month, the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board announced it had awarded two new NHS dental contracts for Bridlington, which would double NHS dental capacity in the town.
