Olympics chief joins Marlow Studios leadership team

Two executives who helped deliver the 2012 Olympics and create Wembley Park have been appointed to lead Marlow Studios.

The Buckinghamshire film studio is expected to support more than 2,000 jobs during its 44-month construction, with preliminary work having begun earlier this year.

Sir John Armitt, who chaired the Olympic Delivery Authority, has been appointed chairman, while Max James has become chief executive.

James led the creation and delivery of major mixed-use developments in London, including Wembley Park, Greenwich Peninsula and Thameside West.

Former chief executive and co-founder Robert Laycock will step down and become a non-executive member of the board.

Armitt said: "The Studios' construction is a strong vote of confidence in the UK creative and technology sectors, reflecting the world-leading role that the UK plays in the global creative economy.

"This leadership role for the UK is founded on our deep-rooted talent base, our long tradition of creativity and our business excellence. It is a cornerstone of the UK economy of which we should all be proud."

The government granted planning permission for the multi-million pound film studio following an appeal.

Buckinghamshire Council had previously rejected the project amid concerns about building on protected land.

The project has been backed by Hollywood figures, including Avatar and Titanic director James Cameron, Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis and James Bond director Sir Sam Mendes.

The 90-acre development will include 18 sound stages and is expected to create about 2,060 permanent on-site jobs.

Laycock said: "My co-founders and I are delighted to have appointed Sir John and Max and we are looking forward to taking Marlow Studios through its next phase and realising our vision."
