A 33-year-old bodybuilder has died after collapsing on stage during a competition in Telford.

Mateusz Chmura, from Wakefield, became unwell while competing at the Physical Culture Association (PCA) British finals at the Telford International Centre on Sunday.

Paramedics were called to the event and Chmura was taken to hospital, where he later died.

His wife has since warned people not to donate to an online fundraiser she believes may be a scam.

In a post on her husband's Instagram account, she described her loss as "incredibly painful" and said the fundraising page had been created without her knowledge or permission.

She said she did not recognise some of the information included in the appeal and was concerned it could be fraudulent.

Any legitimate fundraiser would be shared directly by her, her family or through an "official and trusted channel", she added.

"Right now I simply do not have the words or the strength to say much more," she wrote.

The PCA said the competition was halted while Chmura received medical treatment.

It later resumed before organisers became aware he had died.

'Distressing'

Chmura had been competing in the classic bodybuilding medium category.

In a statement, the association expressed its "deep sadness" and offered its condolences to his family and friends.

"Our heartfelt thanks go to the on-site medics, the trained medical professionals from the audience who stepped forward to assist, Midlands Air Ambulance and the hospital staff for everything they did," they said.

The organisation added that what happened had been "deeply distressing" for those attending the event and encouraged anyone affected to seek support.
