An early 19th Century wooden peg doll has sold at auction for £3,000.

Irita Marriott Auctioneers and Valuers in Melbourne, Derbyshire, said the doll sold for 10 times its original auction estimate of £200-£300 - a record price for a doll of this kind.

Bidding was "fast-paced" and the doll was eventually sold earlier this month to a UK collector, the auction house said.

Peg dolls were usually made by hand - from wooden pegs or small pieces of wood - and cost very little to make. This particular example was complete in its original costume of straw bonnet, cream silk dress, mother of pearl belt and red leather shoes.

The auction house said the seller took the doll to BBC One's Antiques Roadshow 10 years ago, where it was valued at £1,000, at a time when the market for such items was at an all‑time high.
