Man jailed for throwing £12,000 drugs into prison

A man who threw a package containing more than £12,000 worth of illegal drugs into a prison has been jailed.

Police received a report on 11 July last year from a prison guard at HMP Hull who saw a parcel falling over the wall after it had been thrown by 30-year-old Joshua Smith.

On Monday, Smith, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court to three years and eight months in jail after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to two counts of throwing a prohibited article into a prison.

Det Con Heather Butler, from Humberside Police, said: "The package was analysed leading to the discovery of an estimated £12,000 of drugs, including class A drugs, and a mobile phone."

She said CCTV footage from the outside the prison showed a man appearing to make several unsuccessful and a final successful attempt to throw a package over the prison wall shortly before the prison officer located it inside the prison.

"Smith made the decision to facilitate dangerous drugs entering the prison," she said.

"Thankfully on this occasion the package was found almost instantly and never reached its intended destination. However, these drugs could have had catastrophic consequences."
