Moorland fire which raged for two days extinguished

A moorland blaze which burned for nearly two days near Wessenden Reservoir on the outskirts of Huddersfield has been extinguished, the fire service has confirmed.

Firefighters were first called to the blaze near Marsden on Thursday evening, with people urged to avoid the area.

In an update issued at 14:35 BST on Saturday, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident was now closed and crews had handed back over to the National Trust, which owns the land.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Thank you to everyone for your understanding and patience, which allowed the teams to work safely to tackle the fire."

Writing on social media on Friday, nearby residents had reported a strong smell of smoke around Honley, Brockholes and Meltham.

A total of five crews were still dealing with the incident on Saturday morning.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
