Rutland Water is one of the county's most popular destinations

Plans for a new cycling route which would connect Oakham town centre and Rutland Water have been put forward.

Rutland County Council said the scheme would link the town with popular cycling routes in and around Rutland Water to help improve accessibility for residents and visitors, support tourism and local businesses, and reduce reliance on cars.

The route would begin near Oakham Library before continuing along Catmos Street and Stamford Road, linking into existing routes towards Rutland Water.

The council is inviting the public to have their say on the proposals, with a survey open now until 7 July.

The proposed scheme aims to deliver a "safe and direct" active travel connection from Oakham town centre, the council said

The Active Travel Scheme includes segregated cycle paths, new crossings, as well as improved signage, lighting and surfacing.

The council said it would complete an important missing link in Rutland's cycling infrastructure.

Councillor Oliver Hemsley, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: "We know that Rutland Water is one of the county's most valued destinations for both residents and visitors, and these proposals are about making it easier and safer for people to travel there by bike or on foot."

He added: "By improving active travel links between Oakham and Rutland Water, we can support healthier lifestyles, encourage sustainable tourism, reduce traffic and improve connectivity across the county.

"We are keen to hear from local people so that their views can help shape the final scheme."

Residents are encouraged to share their views on the proposal, including any local safety concerns or opportunities, known issues along the route, and how they would use the proposed cycling facilities.
