The Tartan Army are being offered free tickets for events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Organisers say the move is to thank fans who travelled to the US to support the men's national team at the World Cup.

The giveaway is also designed to encourage supporters to cheer on Team Scotland in other sports, such as netball and 3x3 basketball.

But Glasgow 2026 denied it was evidence of sluggish ticket sales for the multi-sports event, which runs from 23 July until 2 August.

Glasgow is hosting a pared-down Games, from 23 July to 2 August, after stepping in when the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to costs.

An email sent to members of the Scotland Supporters Club says: "As our country now prepares to step up give the world a true Scottish welcome for this summer's Commonwealth Games, we've teamed up with Glasgow 2026 to offer you a little thank you."

Up to four free tickets can be claimed by a member of the club for a variety of sessions and sports.

These include para powerlifting at the SEC Armadillo on 24 July and the 3x3 basketball session on the same day, which sees Scotland play Australia.

Tickets are also being offered for a morning session of athletics on 27 July and a netball clash between Scotland and Jamaica at the OVO Hydro on 29 July.

Other sports on offer are boxing and weightlifting.

Organisers told BBC Scotland News that the free tickets were limited in number.

But the fact that some of the events offered feature the host nation - which would be expected to be the most in demand sessions - will raise concerns about ticket sales.

Phil Batty, the chief executive of Glasgow 2026, told BBC Scotland earlier this week there was great demand for tickets, citing sales for cycling and swimming events.

Neither of those sports are being offered to the Supporters Club.

Batty described sales as "really strong" and praised Glasgow as having an "amazing fanbase" for major sports events.

The Commonwealth Games website lists 27 of the sessions as "selling fast" but another 97 are stated to still have "good availability."

Announcing the ticket giveaway, Batty said: "The Tartan Army captured the hearts of so many at the World Cup and did Scotland proud.

"The incredible support shown for the national team is exactly the groundswell of energy we want behind Team Scotland as they prepare to compete on home soil at the Commonwealth Games. This ticketing initiative is a thank you to those fans."

Games tickets went on sale last October, but some sports fans complained that prices were too high, saying many of the tickets were three figures.

Ticket prices were listed as starting at £26 for medal sessions and £17 for non-medal sessions, although costs vary depending on the sport.

The top priced ticket for an athletics medal event at Scotstoun Stadium was £150, and a morning non-medal session of track cycling was listed at £90.
