A 20-year-old student has appeared at Guernsey's Magistrate's Court charged with the attempted murder of her mother.

Shakira Naftel, of Victoria Avenue, appeared in court to confirm her name and address.

The court heard that she attempted to murder Heidi Naftel either on or before 26 April 2026 at their home on Victoria Avenue in St Sampson.

The case is due to return to court for a committal hearing on 24 June. Naftel was remanded in custody.

Ahead of the hearing, Det Supt Jonathan Bancroft of Guernsey Police, said one person was taken to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, where they were still "in a serious but stable condition".

He added: "Today crime scene investigators have been carrying out work on a property in the area of Victoria Avenue, which is why there has been an increased police presence in that area.

"Incidents of this nature are thankfully very rare occurrences in Guernsey, and I'd like to take this opportunity to reassure islanders that... there is no information at present that suggests any wider risk."

He also said inquiries were ongoing, and anyone with any relevant information was being asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.
