Plans for 60 homes lodged with council

Plans for 60 new homes to be built in a Nottinghamshire village have been lodged with Broxtowe Borough Council.

Housing developer Peveril Homes has submitted an application for land previously occupied by an open-cast coal mine near Stapleford Road in Trowell.

If approved by the authority, the homes would be a mix of one and four bedroom properties, each being two storeys or slightly higher, which "will appeal to families, downsizers and first time buyers", according to planning documents.

Nearby land to the east of the field received approval for a new cricket pitch and facilities earlier this year.

Peveril Homes is also proposing 45% of the properties would be classed as affordable, with access to the new site coming from Stapleford Road.

Residents have said the area is known for flooding issues at times of high rainfall.

Parts of Trowell suffered with flooding during Storm Babet in October 2023, where 25 homes around the Dawn View and Trowell Park Drive area had internal flooding, according to Nottinghamshire County Council documents.

Gillian Deeman, who has lived in Trowell for 17 years, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service there was no need for more housing in the village.

"The first thing I thought of [when I saw the plans] was the people on the other side of the estate, it floods," she said.

"With more houses the roads are going to get busier, [and] you can't get an appointment at the doctor's now – another 60 homes, what's going to happen?"

Another village resident, who asked not to be named and has lived there for 25 years, said the field the proposed homes would sit on acts as a separation between Trowell and Stapleford.

"You can't say we're a village anymore," they said.

"The council will do what they want to do regardless of what residents say."

The application is pending a decision by the borough council.
