Last chance to view cemetery mausoleum plans

People can still have their say on plans to build six mausoleum blocks at a cemetery in Surrey.

Plans for the new community mausoleums at Brookwood Cemetery went on show at the start of the month in the North Cemetery Chapel and can be viewed until Sunday.

Avril Kirby, manager of Brookwood Cemetery, said there was growing demand for above-ground interment, adding: "Our existing community mausoleums are now fully subscribed, with all chambers either occupied or reserved."

According to the cemetery, above-ground interment is one of the many end-of-life options at Brookwood and is a popular choice among the Italian and Sicilian communities.

Kirby said the new blocks would provide an additional 84 chambers for families who choose above-ground interment.

Greenbridge Designs is due to begin work in October on the six blocks next to the existing mausoleums, she added.

The cemetery opened in 1854 and its first community mausoleums were built in 2008, providing 98 chambers before reaching capacity in 2016.

A second phase of development was completed in 2016, providing a further 96 chambers, which reached capacity this year.
