Day two of Radio 1's Big Weekend is under way in Sunderland with Swedish pop star Zara Larsson set to headline.

The festival, which is the radio station's flagship event, is this year taking place at Herrington Country Park.

About 100,000 people are expected to attend across three days and Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope, who was born in Newcastle before her family moved to Northumberland, described it as having a "carnival" atmosphere.

However, some attendees reported issues with buses on Friday and, in response, Sunderland City Council said it would bring in "a continuous shuttle operation running between the event site and all transport hubs for those who have booked the service".

Indie rock band Swindled will play the Introducing stage on Saturday with band members Jonny and Will Swindle, Felix Walls, Alex Winn and Thomas Hall growing up just minutes away from Herrington Park.

Ahead of their performance, Jonny told Radio Newcastle the stage "looks unbelievable - a lot better than we're used to".

The day will also see performances by Ellie Goulding, Lola Young, James Blake and Mitski.

'We bring energy'

Hope, meanwhile, told the BBC's Look North there was "a vibe, a really nice atmosphere".

"It's a bank holiday weekend, you've got that anticipation, it's like a carnival. It's set to be an amazing weekend.

"I think music's in our blood. We are so proud of the musical heritage we have up here. Just the other day Sam Fender [from North Shields] won an Ivor Novello award.

"So I feel like we're representing. For a lot of the artists coming up, to see what our crowds are like is really exciting. We bring energy."

Some people who had been at the first day, though, took to social media afterwards to report issues with the shuttle bus service organised by the city council.

'Allow plenty of time'

One described the arrangements as an "absolute shambles" with another saying there were not enough signs directing attendees to the pick-up point.

A third person said they had endured a lengthy wait at Park Lane station in the city centre with "one bus every 20 minutes for a queue that was miles long".

The council said it had a "robust transport management plan in place" but would introduce additional measures "following feedback and observations from the first day of the event".

In a statement, it added: "For the remainder of the weekend, there will be a continuous shuttle operation running between the event site and all transport hubs for those who have booked the service.

"We would continue to advise anyone attending the event to allow plenty of time for their journey and arrive early where possible to help avoid delays at peak times.

"While some attendees experienced longer wait times leaving the site, the park was fully cleared ahead of schedule, with everyone safely off site by 11.40pm following the event finish at 10pm."

Sunday's final day will see shows by the likes of CMAT, Niall Horan, Myles Smith and Ezra Collective, with Londoner Olivia Dean then playing her first UK festival headline set from 20:45 BST.

DJ Fatboy Slim brought the opening day's proceedings to a close on Friday following sets from Australian producers Fisher and Sonny Fodera, Birmingham-born singer Clementine Douglas and American DJ MK.

All set times can be found on the Radio 1 Big Weekend app which can be downloaded here.

Each day's performances will end approximately at 22:00.

The weekend's action will be broadcast on BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Sounds.
