Arrests after drone and drugs found near prison

Three men have been arrested after a drone, suspected drugs and a knife were discovered by police during a patrol near a prison in South Yorkshire.

An officer spotted a black Volvo S60 parked on a dirt track near HMP Lindholme at about 22:15 BST on Tuesday before it was driven off and failed to stop, with items being seen thrown from the car during a pursuit, according to police.

The items were later recovered and found to include the drone and a camouflaged parcel containing Class A and Class B drugs, tobacco, e-cigarettes and a knife.

The car was eventually stopped and the men were arrested and later bailed pending further inquiries, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failure to stop, going equipped, theft from a shop, and attempting to convey a prohibited article into a prison.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failure to stop, criminal damage, driving - excess drugs, and attempting to convey a prohibited article into a prison.

Another 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, burglary, failure to stop, dangerous driving, and attempting to convey a prohibited article into a prison.

South Yorkshire Police said officers had been working alongside the Prison Service to increase patrols outside prisons in order to identify offences and prevent contraband getting into the facilities.
