Man arrested for murder after elderly woman found dead

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s was found dead.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said it was alerted to an unexplained death at an address on Appleford Drive in Abingdon at about 14:20 BST on Thursday afternoon.

The force said officers found a woman in her 80s dead at the property, and that her next of kin had been made aware.

It added that a 36-year-old man from the Oxfordshire town had been arrested on suspicion of murder, and remained in police custody.

Investigating Officer Stuart Brangwin, from TVP, said: "I understand that incidents like this will cause concern in the community but we are investigating the death as a priority and there is an increased police presence in the area."

"At this early stage we do not currently believe there is any threat to the wider public as we have made an arrest and we are not looking for anyone else, at this time."

Brangwin added that anyone with information regarding the death should contact the force.
