Two officers injured in car ramming after police chase suspect

A 23-year-old man has been arrested after two police officers were injured in a car ramming in Londonderry on Thursday.

It happened on an estate in Galliagh, after a police pursuit that began in the Waterside.

The suspect was arrested for a number of offences, including attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, criminal damage and possession of a class A drug.

"Police will not tolerate reckless and dangerous driving and will continue to ensure those who pose a danger to road users are taken off of our roads," said the PSNI in a statement.

The vehicle first came to attention of officers conducting patrols on the Waterside area of the city, when they noticed it did not have valid insurance and believed it to be driven by a disqualified driver.

When signalled to stop near the Foyle Bridge, police said the vehicle made off at speed towards the city centre "showing little regard for other road users".

A pursuit then ensued but was called off.

Later, the vehicle was seen again by police around Templemore Road, who observed it enter an estate in the Galliagh.

Police said: "The vehicle having realised it was in a dead end, on several occasions rammed a police vehicle causing significant damage at a cost to the taxpayer and injuring both of the officers inside the vehicle."

Police then brought the incident to an end with the assistance of officers from the Armed Support Unit making "tactical contact" to stop the vehicle and driver.
