Plans for 128 homes in village approved
Getty ImagesPlanning approval has been given for 128 new homes, despite complaints the number was "excessive".
Shropshire councillors agreed to allow the development in Shawbury to go ahead after hearing Shingler Homes had addressed concerns over flooding and had agreed to make contributions to local healthcare.
The area's councillor, Alison Williams, said people were worried about access, pressure on local facilities and the risk of flooding.
But members of the planning committee were reminded they had to favour any "sustainable development" because the council does not yet have an updated local housing plan in place.
The new homes will be built on land between Aries Drive and Poynton Road and Nigel Thorns, the developer's planning consultant, said it was a "sustainable" on a site that had been accepted as development land.
Shropshire Council hopes to have a new Local Plan for the county in place by 2029, but until then national guidance limits its powers to refuse planning permission.
The council and the developer reached an agreement for affordable housing and said £1.8 million would be available for local facilities, including for the GP surgery and the school.
"We believe the concerns have been addressed," Thorns said.
The committee was told that a separate application has already been granted allowing a temporary construction access directly from the A53 to the west of the site.
