A bin lorry driver has been accused of killing an 11-year-old girl in a crash in the Scottish Borders.

Elizabeth Bell was struck by the vehicle on the A6105 near East Gordon on 31 January 2024.

She was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Edinburgh with critical injuries. She died there a week later.

The driver David Maxwell, 35, from Galashiels, made no plea to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

The case was continued for further examination and Maxwell was granted bail.

Elizabeth was a pupil at Earlston Primary School and lived in East Gordon.

At the time of the incident council chief executive David Robertson offered his "deepest sympathies and condolences" and said the council was "cooperating fully with ongoing investigations".
