Man, 29, arrested in police raid over racist traffic-cone attack

Police have arrested a man over an attack on a delivery driver during disorder in Glasgow city centre last month.

A traffic cone was thrown at Muhammad Jawad Yaqoob, 31, following an anti-immigration protest at Glasgow Green on 25 July.

Officers have charged a 29-year-old man with racially-aggravated assault over the incident, which was filmed and widely shared on social media.

He was arrested in the Govan area of the city. Fifteen people were arrested on the day of the protests.

Police Scotland said a major investigation team was trying to identify more suspects and further arrests are planned.

An anti-racism protest had taken place at Glasgow Green before counter-protesters turned up at the scene last month.

Police said "disparate groups" engaged in acts of violence, disorder, intimidation and hate-motivated offences at various locations - all coinciding with the opening weekend of the Commonwealth Games.

The force said 1,700 people were in attendance and an operation was put in place to support public safety and minimise disruption.

Delivery driver Yaqoob previously told BBC Scotland News he felt too afraid to leave his home or return to work after the incident.

He had just picked up an order from the Palm Tree Kitchen on Bridge Street in Glasgow on the Saturday afternoon when he encountered dozens of protestors.

Yaqoob, who moved to Glasgow from Pakistan, told the BBC he has mostly found Scotland to be a welcoming place - but that his recent experience had "not been welcoming at all".
