Bridge structure lifted into place over River Avon

A project to build a new walking and cycling crossing in Worcestershire has reached a new milestone after the bridge's structure was successfully lifted into place.

Three sections measuring more than 90m (295ft) in total and two leg sections weighing about 100 tonnes, have been installed on Hampton Bridge, over the River Avon in Evesham, Worcestershire,

The installation required a specialist crane and temporary closure of the river to ensure the lift could be carried out safely, the county council said.

Construction of the bridge, which is expected to cost £16m, is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

Councillor Tom Wells, cabinet member for highways and transport at Worcestershire County Council, said it was an "exciting moment".

"Residents and visitors will now be able to see the bridge taking shape across the river, providing a real sense of the progress in delivering this piece of infrastructure for Evesham," he added.

Works to add linked footways to Pershore Road as well as railings, lighting and drainage are set to continue, alongside landscaping before the bridge can be opened for use.

The bridge, which will connect Hampton with Evesham town centre, would improve connectivity for people walking, wheeling and cycling, the council added.
