Decision delayed on closure of Time Capsule ice rink
GoogleNo decision will be taken on whether to close a popular Lanarkshire ice rink next week, despite council officers recommending it close.
Local skating groups and ice hockey teams reacted with dismay to the news the Time Capsule rink in Coatbridge could become a play area with padel courts.
A report to North Lanarkshire Council's communities committee stated that the move would increase footfall to the facility.
The Labour-run local authority said councillors would be given "time and space" before making a decision, letting them hear feedback from affected groups.
Programmes that take place at the rink include an early years introduction to ice skating, a figure skating junior academy and five junior ice hockey teams.
A petition against the changes has picked up several thousand signatures and several people have spoken to BBC Scotland News.
Rhiannon Scott, who coaches with synchronised skating club Starlight Synchro, said closing the rink would take away something unique to the area.
Martyn King, a coach with the Lanarkshire Lightning youth ice hockey team, warned it would force dozens of children to quit the sport.
The local authority's communities convener, Councillor Geraldine Woods, said: "This report sets out a range of possible ways to enhance the offer at the Time Capsule and improve its long-term sustainability.
"However, it is entirely appropriate that councillors are given the time and space to fully review the information presented to them."
