Boy, 14, arrested for beach bottle assault
GoogleA 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a man was hit by a bottle on a beach.
Northumbria Police said a man in his 30s had been assaulted with a bottle near the dunes of Sandhaven Beach in South Shields on Monday.
It said it had arrested the 14-year-old boy on suspicion of assault. He has since been released under investigation.
The victim was taken to hospital to checked over for minor injuries, the force said.
Northumbria Police also said on the same day it received reports of a disturbance near to Sea Road in South Shields at 20:40 BST.
A large group of boys had gathered on the beach and two of them had been involved in a "brief altercation", it said.
"Officers attended the area where no criminal offences were made out and no injuries were reported, and the group were dispersed," a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade said its volunteers had 12 calls within three hours on Monday.
There were five cases of lost children looking for their families, one man suffering from sunstroke, one person had a seizure, another had breathing difficulties and one person had back pain and needed to be stretchered from the beach.
While responding to those incidents, volunteers helped two "heavily intoxicated" teenagers and were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service.
A South Shields brigade spokesperson described "an extremely busy day for the team".
"We requested assistance from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team as at one time we were dealing with three incidents simultaneously."
