Plans lodged for padel courts at squash club
Wigginton Squash and Social ClubTwo padel courts have been included in plans to expand a sports club in York.
Wigginton Squash and Social Club, off Mill Lane, has submitted an application to "improve and modernise" its facilities for the local community.
The proposed changes would extend its clubhouse, including the bar and kitchen, and put new cladding on the building.
Two uncovered padel courts would be built next to existing tennis courts and outside lights are planned to allow people to play in the evenings.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the proposal to York City Council stated the extension would be "modest" and the building would remain roughly the same height.
It added the works would see part of the front of the building made higher to accommodate a new lift.
The application said: "The proposals deliver community benefits - modernised club facilities including better access, an extended bar and kitchen, and new popular padel courts for a growth sport.
"The design is proportionate sustainable and sensitive to neighbours."
Padel is played on an enclosed court about a third of the size those used for tennis with balls played off glass walls similar to squash.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the sport's governing body, stated it is easy to learn and sociable, contributing to its growing popularity.
The application is now under consideration by council planners.
