Man found guilty of attempting to murder teen

A man who shot a teenager in the head on a street in Sheffield has been found guilty of attempted murder.

The 16-year-old boy was left with life-changing injuries after Tanzir Ali, 27, shot him on London Road in Sheffield at about 17:15 GMT on 24 November last year, a trial heard.

According to police, Ali fled the scene and travelled to Aberdeen, where he was later arrested alongside Sharna Osborne, who had booked a hotel for them both using false details.

At Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, Ali, of Glencoe Road, who had previously admitted possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, was found guilty of attempted murder. He is due to be sentenced on 18 November.

Osborne, 24, of Duthie Terrace in Aberdeen, was found guilty at the same court on Thursday of assisting an offender - a charge she had denied - and is also due to be sentenced on 18 November.

According to South Yorkshire Police, officers had secured "vital" CCTV evidence following the incident which captured the exact moment of the shooting and which had led to both Ali and Osborne being charged.

During Ali's trial, Sheffield Crown Court was told that he had not meant to press the trigger on the weapon and he did not know it was loaded, police said.

However, CCTV evidence shown in court tracked Ali's actions in the minutes before, during and after the shooting.

CCTV footage showed Ali in the company of several others and engaged in an "altercation" with the victim, with Ali being seen to pull a gun out of his pocket, a loud bang being heard and the victim seen falling to the ground, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The CCTV pictures further captured Ali returning the firearm to his pocket and fleeing the scene, police said.

Following the convictions, Greg Dakin, senior investigating officer, said the lives of both the victim and his family had been "changed forever by this devastating attack".

"The boy's family were forced to endure the pain of waiting at his bedside, not knowing if he would pass away from his injuries," Dakin said.

"Over the course of this investigation, we have had the victim and his family at the forefront of our minds, and I am glad we have helped secure justice for them.

"Ali attempted to kill a child and then fled hundreds of miles away in a cowardly effort to escape the consequences, aided by Osborne."

Ali and Osborne were both remanded into custody ahead of their sentencing hearing in November, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.
