Appeal to help fund retired police dogs' surgery
Thin Blue Paw FoundationA fundraising appeal has been launched to help two retired police dogs in need of medical care.
The Thin Blue Paw charity, which supports former service animals, wants to raise £6,000 to cover treatment for German Shepherds Miki and Kenai.
Miki, six, requires orthopaedic surgery after damaging a cruciate ligament, while Kenai, seven, has already undergone surgery to a leg fracture.
His former handler, Claire Starkey, described him as her "best mate", adding: "He was an excellent tracker and deserves the very best of health in retirement."
Both dogs are being looked after by a specialist veterinary centre in Richmond, with Kenai recovering at home, while Miki is due to have his operation later this week.
Thin Blue Paw FoundationThe charity's founder, Kieran Stanbridge, said both animals had served "with enthusiasm and commitment", but had been left with lasting physical injuries.
He said: "Now they both need surgery so they can run and play again.
"They've got long lives ahead of them and we want to ensure they can enjoy it."
Miki was forced to retire early after being diagnosed with spondylosis, hip dysplasia and a ruptured cruciate ligament.
He lives in Northallerton with Starkey, while Kenai, who broke his leg on 9 May, was rehomed by police officers Ashley and Jess, after working as a general purpose and firearms support dog for six years.
"From day one, it's like he's always been with us. He's such a soft, playful dog. You'd never believe he'd been trained to bite," Ashley said.
The couple said the charity's support had been "a huge weight off our minds" following the accident.
The organisation has already committed to paying the costs, which are expected to cost up to £3,000 for each dog.
Appealing for help to meet the costs, Stanbridge said: "We're incredibly proud to be there for Miki and Kenai, but we need help. Every single pound will go to good use."
