A man who was shot by police during an arrest has appeared in court charged with firearms and explosives offences.

Sean O'Meara, 37, was injured by armed officers who attended a property in Ashford Road, Hollingbourne on 7 July while executing a warrant.

He was arrested and taken to hospital with life-changing injuries, Kent Police said.

O'Meara appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court by video link on Thursday where he was remanded in custody, with a further hearing set for 21 May.

Police said searches carried out at the address after his arrest found "a number of suspicious devices", which were made safe with support from Ministry of Defence explosive ordnance teams.

He is charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, manufacturing firearms, possessing a shotgun without a certificate, explosives offences and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

O'Meara is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 21 May.
