A warning has been issued over the dangers of derelict buildings after a fire at a former Derby breakers yard.

Six fire crews from stations in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were called to the site of Albert Looms in Megaloughton Lane, Spondon, at about 17:05 BST on Sunday 14 June.

Following the incident, Derbyshire Police said it had been made aware of a number of issues at the site including the setting of fires.

The business closed in 2024 after more than a century of trading with plans in place to redevelop the yard.

The force said derelict buildings like those at Albert Looms pose "significant safety hazards" and "could be at risk of collapse" and added arson at such sites impacted the resources of the emergency services.

It said trespassers were at risk from hazardous materials, unstable floors, weakened supports, debris, flooded areas and exposed electrics, as well as health risks from mould, damp and vermin.

A spokesperson for the Chaddesden, Oakwood and Spondon beat team said: "Protect yourself and the safety of others by please staying out of derelict buildings."
