Work to replace the track on a section of South Yorkshire's railways will cause disruption over two weekends in May.

On 9-10 and 16-17 May sections of track around Swinton station will be replaced, with new foundations also being laid.

Cross Country said that meant their trains would not call at Wakefield Westgate, while services between Sheffield and Leeds would operate to a different timetable.

Northern said services between Sheffield and Doncaster/Adwick would not call at Swinton while trains between Sheffield and Hull would also not be stopping there. A reduced service will operate between Moorthorpe and Leeds. Buses will replace trains between Sheffield and Moorthorpe/York.

Karen Duffy, Network Rail operations director said, "Renewing the track at Swinton is vital for maintaining a safe and reliable railway."

A spokesperson for CrossCountry and Northern urged people to check before they travel.

Follow-up work, mostly taking place overnight and at weekends, is planned to be completed in August.
