A man and a woman were brought out of the sea by rescuers in Brighton after an alert near Palace Pier on Sunday night.

Sussex Police said concerns were raised for a man's welfare shortly after 21:30 BST and emergency teams went to the scene.

Members of the public went into the water and recovered the man from the sea, officers said, and a woman who had been in the water with the man was also helped out.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital.
