Blaze at former airfield now 'under control'

A warehouse fire at a former airfield in Leicestershire has been brought largely under control, the fire service has said.

Multiple crews remain at the scene at Bruntingthorpe Airfield, a former RAF base which is now used as a vehicle test track and storage facility.

Graham Vaux, area manager at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, said the service was called just after 08:00 BST on Friday to a fire in a warehouse that was being used as a spray booth.

A spokesperson for Cox Automotive Europe said its Manheim Vehicle Services site at the airfield was involved in the fire.

All staff and personnel have been safely evacuated from the site, they added.

Ten fire crews, two aerial appliances, a water carrier and a hazardous material support unit had attended the scene, said Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

Vaux said: "We have largely got the fire under control, however, there's still smoke being released - this is reducing.

"We are advising residents to keep their windows and doors closed and we will be scaling down the incident soon."
