A climber has been rescued from cliffs at St Cyrus near Montrose in a late-night multi-agency operation.

Coastguard rescue teams were alerted at about 22:45 after the climber got into difficulty about 40ft (12m) from the ground.

A rope team winched the person onto the beach and a Coastguard helicopter, sent from Inverness, transferred their cliff technician and the casualty back to the top of the cliff.

The climber was then passed to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Montrose, Stonehaven and Arbroath Coastguard rescue teams were involved in the rescue operation.

RNLI Montrose's relief and inshore lifeboats also attended the incident.

RNLI Montrose posted on its Facebook page: "Our all-weather lifeboat crew stood by, supporting with search lights and awaiting further information on whether the casualty required to be transported to shore by sea.

"Both of our lifeboats were then stood down at approximately 01:13."
