A Kent seaside town is set to get its own council.

Thanet District Council (TDC) has decided to create a new town council for Margate.

The process began in 2025 and the full council agreed to finalise the creation after 85% of participants across two consultations agreed with the plans.

The new town council, which will help organise grants for community organisations and install benches, will officially come into existence in April next year.

TDC leader and Labour councillor Rick Everitt said: "For 52 years Margate has had no political identity of its own."

Local Conservative leader George Kup said: "We welcome this. This is something that's been campaigned on by many political parties."

Reform's Barry Manners added: "It's a good day for local democracy."

TDC, alongside every other council in Kent, will be abolished in 2027, with the county instead redrawn into three or four larger local councils.

This has led to a push for all areas to be covered by town or parish councils, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The existing ward councillors on TDC will serve as a shadow council until the 2027 elections.
