Glasgow's subway system is to run until 01:00 on nights when large gigs are being held at the city's Bellahouston Park this summer.

The service usually winds down shortly after 23:00 each evening, but operators Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) will extend services throughout Summer Sessions in June and July.

Kings of Leon, Pitbull and Alanis Morrisette are all performing as part of the gigs, with the subway's Ibrox station one of the nearest public transport locations.

Fans getting the train home can also get later services home from the nearby Dumbreck station, with services there running until 00:16.

Stephen O'Neill, the event manager for Glasgow Summer Sessions, said promoters DF Concerts were keen to encourage sustainable travel options to and from events.

He added: "Having the Subway running until 01:00 and a train back to the city centre just after midnight on event nights gives fans additional travel options and allows them to enjoy the full event experience with confidence and peace of mind.

"We're really grateful to Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and Scotrail for arranging this and for making the Glasgow Summer Sessions experience that bit smoother for ticket holders, and for providing sustainable travel options."

Six shows in total are being held as part of the Summer Sessions line-up, starting with folk rock and Americana festival State Fayre taking place on Saturday. The Proclaimers and KT Tunstall will join the line-up.

Teddy Swims headlines the following night, with other gigs seeing Alanis Morrisette on 30 June, Pitbull on 1 July, Kings of Leon on 3 July and My Chemical Romance on 4 July.

A previously announced gig by rock legend Neil Young was cancelled after the singer said he needed to take a break.

Full travel information and event-specific guidance, including access to sustainable journey planner You.Smart.Thing, are available via the Summer Sessions website.

The news comes a day after SPT announced it was closing the subway for four Sundays over July and August for the testing of a new signalling and communications system.

The testing will take place on 19 July, 16 August, 23 August and 30 August.

Further testing of platform screen doors, which are now fully installed in three stations - Govan, Partick and Ibrox - will also take place on those days.
