Old eye hospital site may be replaced with homes
BBCAn eye hospital no longer deemed fit for purpose may be knocked down and turned into homes.
Sunderland Eye Infirmary on Queen Alexandra Road is soon to be replaced by a new £50m building elsewhere in the city, called the Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital.
Documents published on the council's planning portal suggest the outdated healthcare facility, which was originally opened in 1948, could be demolished and replaced by 62 residential units. Plans have yet to be submitted.
The demolition would also involve the removal of the site's car park, according to the documents.
The new Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital will open its eye emergency department at 14:00 BST on 11 July.
All other services will be moved to the Plater Way site by 23 July, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has previously said.
