Early bin collections to continue amid heat

Bin crews in a part of Surrey will continue to operate earlier than usual to avoid the hottest part of the day amid continuing high temperatures, a council said.

Residents in the borough of Waverley have been advised to leave bins out overnight and no later than 06:00 BST on collection day.

Waverley Borough Council said it was working with its waste management contractor Biffa to ensure the continued well-being of crews and to meet the needs of residents.

"While those early starts require commitment from staff, they are an important way of helping to protect their health and wellbeing during heatwaves," a council spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The spokesperson said while they are working to ensure waste collections are not disrupted in the hot weather, working in very high temperatures can be "particularly challenging" for the crews while they carry out their "physically demanding work".

"We're extremely grateful for the work the crews do to keep services running for residents and also want to thank all our residents for their patience and cooperation," they added.
