Tributes to 'loving' granddad killed in crash

A family has paid tribute to a "gentle, loving, kind-hearted" grandfather who died in car crash.

William Campbell, originally from Scotland, was driving southbound on the A1(M), near Darlington, when the three-vehicle collision happened on 4 September.

The 65-year-old, known as Billy, was travelling with his wife and granddaughter, who survived the incident.

"His final thought was that of the safety of his granddaughter and he will always be loved and missed by all that knew him," his family said.

Campbell had lived in Yorkshire with his wife but "always loved his beautiful homeland" and was "a true gentleman".

They were travelling on the motorway following a family trip to Scotland when the collision happened.

"He was a giant Scottish teddy bear who would give you his last pound if you needed it," his family said.

"His wife has received hundreds of messages in a giant wave of grief as big as his heart was.

"He has left a big hole in the lives of everyone who knew him."

The A1(M) was closed for several hours following the crash.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision or may have dashcam footage.
